GB’s Olympic champion Pearne-Webb retires
Great Britain’s Olympic gold medal-winning hockey captain Alex Danson-Bennett has announced her retirement from the sport following a long battle with a concussion.
The 36-year-old, who won gold at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and a bronze at London 2012, suffered a head injury following a fall in 2018, leading to her absence from competition for over two years.
Danson-Bennett, who made her international debut in 2001, scored 115 goals in 306 appearances for her country and was a key player in the England and Great Britain teams for nearly two decades.
Speaking about her decision to retire, the seasoned striker said, “After a long 18 months of concussion, even to get to this point now has been a huge undertaking.”
“I want to say thank you, hockey, for the incredible journey – there have been highs and there have been lows, but what an honour to live out my dream,” she added.
Despite her retirement, Danson-Bennett leaves a lasting legacy in British hockey and will be remembered as one of the country’s greatest players.
Her leadership, skill, and dedication to the sport have inspired a generation of hockey players and fans, and her presence will be sorely missed on the field.
We wish Alex Danson-Bennett all the best in her future endeavors and thank her for her immense contribution to the sport of hockey.
